By the end of the 1790s, Philip Hooker had received two other major commissions-for the second building of Union College (1797-1804) in Schenectady (fig. 10) and the New York State Arsenal (c. 1799) in Albany. This early stage of his career thus featured impressive projects that ordinarily might not appear in an architect's oeuvreuntil later in life. As the nineteenth century began, the thirty-four-year-old architect seemed well positioned to continue his active involvement in shaping the rapidly expanding capital city.
